Places to visit during Shillong Trekking Tour

Umiam Lake

Umiam lake is an artificial lake only twenty kilometers from the capital city of Meghalaya that is Shillong. If you love silence then you must visit this exotic place to spend a quality hour in tranquillity. The only sound that is visible in the beautiful site is the tweeting and chirping of birds. The beauty of umiam lake is beyond your imagination, as you can witness lush green valleys all around it and in the middle you can find an island which increases its stunningness. The best thing to observe in this site is the sunset because this particular experience that umiam provides to its visitors is truly speechless. Apart from sightseeing you can also perform adventure water sports like boating, swimming and kayaking.

Shillong Peak

This beautiful peak is situated at an height of 1,965 metre above seas level, shillong peak referred to as the highest peak of Meghalaya. Visiting this required peak will help you to witness the prettiness of the entire shillong city, you can have a 360 degree view from this peak of Shillong. Within this peak there is a high tower with a telescope which provides its travellers a birds eye view. It is located at a distance of only 10 kilometres from the main city. The best part of Shillong Peak is that it is surrounded by dogs most of the time due to its high altitude. Due to security reasons at the air force headquarters, tourists have to show their original ID proofs. Even travellers have to surrender their cameras before entering into the viewpoints.

Elephant Falls

Your excursion to Meghalaya is incomplete if you miss this amazing waterfall which is only 12 km away from the main Shillong city. It is named elephant falls due to an elephant-like stone at its foot. It is an outstanding place for spending some hours with nature. The best thing about this falls is that the moment you reach it beneath you will feel like sitting and watching this falling cascade for a while. The locals of its region called it ‘Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew’ which literally means three big step waterfalls. Laitlum Canyons

Laitlum canyons is only at a distance of 30 minutes drive from Shillong main city, it is approximately 21 kilometres. It is a unique location that provides the greatest panoramic view of a village called Rasong which is situated down in the hills of Laitlum. And to reach the village you have to trek around 3,000 steps. The best time to visit this unbelievable site is at the time of sunset as you can witness how the sun is disappearing by going into the valleys. This beautiful site is not visited by many but it is quite calm and scenic. Laitlum can be visited by families, friend groups as well as couples. If you want to spend quality time with your loved ones then you must visit this place by keeping some extra hours in your hand.

Wards Lake

Ward’s Lake is one of the most visited places in Shillong, you can visit this stunning lake at any season and hour of the year. From June to July it receives the highest number of tourists. Because of its wooden bridge and grassy slopes this beautiful lake provides a peaceful lake-side relaxing place. You can find a gravel path which encircles the lake and flower gardens along with tall trees that provides cover to its visitors from the hot sun. This Ward’s lake is named after William Ward, more than hundred years ago who was a Chief Commissioner From the British era. Lady Hydari Park

Lady Hydari Park is situated at a distance of only 2.5 kilometres from the Shillong main city. It is locally known as Phan Nonglait Park. This beautiful park is termed as the public park located in the heart of Shillong in Meghalaya. It is also considered as a small zoo which contains some rare species and it is one of the best places of Shillong to visit and experience. Inside this park there is a small museum in which you can find skulls, skin and skeletons of many animals like stuffed leopards, elephants, etc. It also has a children’s park with playing items like seesaws and swings.

Shillong Golf Course

Shillong Golf Course is one of the finest natural golf courses in India and is a lush green 18-holed golf course. It is located at an altitude of 5200 feet, and is about 3.6 km from Police Bazar. Due to its scenic beauty and greenery it has been termed as the ‘Gleneagles of the East’ by the United States Golf Association and Museum. It was originally made by the British. Don Bosco Museum
