Places to visit during Shillong Camping

Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake, an artificial lake came into existence in the year 1960, when the government of Assam decided to construct a dam to generate hydro-electrical energy. This lake is about 18 kilometres from Shillong, this lake is encircled with green valleys, travellers can also observe an island in the middle of this lake and if you love water sports like swimming, riding a water scooter, boating, kayaking then this place is perfect for you. The best thing to observe in this location is a sunrise because during the time of sunrise you can witness a golden pearl over the lake water, and it enhances the beauty of the lake when the sun rays by cutting the valleys hit the lake water.

Shillong Peak

Shillong peak is the topmost point in Shillong and the best part of this location is that you can witness the entire view of Shillong city from this point. To visit this place travellers, have to carry their Original ID’s proof because these ID’s travellers have to submit at the entrance gate, as this area comes under Air Force Base of Meghalaya. You can collect back your IDs at the time of leaving. It is situated at an altitude of 6,449 metres above sea level and to observe each part and corner of the city, a telescope has been set up at this location. Travellers, with the help of this telescope can also witness Himalayas during the coldest months of the year.

Elephant Falls

Elephant falls, a beautiful fall which is situated quite near to the capital city of Meghalaya. This fall consists of three layers, the topmost layer is nestled within the thick forest but it is completely visible, the second layer compared to first and third is quite slim therefore, you can observe this fall clearly only in winter season and the third layer is fully visible and stunning to its travellers. This fall derives its name as “Elephant Falls” in the British era within India by the Brits. When he spotted a huge elephant shaped like a rock next to the falls. Nevertheless, in the year 1897 Meghalaya, suffered from a great earthquake which abolished the rock and later on it splashed away. Bottomless of this fall there is a natural pond which allows an outstanding background for selfies and pictures.

Laitlum Canyons

Situated at a distance of about 12 kilometres from Shillong. Laitlum canyons, an idealistic destination because of its unbelievable qualities, travellers to this location can witness lots of misty fog and floating clouds here. Best time to visit this place is at sunrise as you can witness a small helmet which is situated deep in the edges of Laitlum village along with a waterfall and river. And if travellers want to visit this small village, then they have to trek down from a stairway that has around 3000 steps. The best season to visit this place is winter.

Wards Lake

Wards lake, an amazing lake with a boating activity, situated in the centre of a busy city. The entire lake is surrounded by green slopes, and next to this lake you can perceive a gravel path. Which helps its travellers to go for a walk and witness a colourful flowery bed. This lake was constructed during the British era by the Chief Minister of Assam, Sir William Ward. Through the centre of this lake a wooden bridge was constructed so that visitors can go across the lake. If you have an intense feeling in boating then this place is extremely suitable for you. On the other side of this lake travellers can even perceive a botanical garden, where they can find lots of orchid species.

Lady Hydari Park

Lady Hydari Park, a park which is only 2.5 kilometres away from the Shillong bus stand, is named after Lady Hydari, who was the wife of the governor of Assam. This park is not only a park but a park cum zoo. There are nearly 73 species of birds and 140 species of reptiles inside this zoo. Apart from these things travellers can also witness a museum where they find the skull of an elephant and stuffed leopards along with many other animals. This park is quite big as its total area is about more than one square kilometre and it is designed in a Japanese Garden Style. Inside this park children can observe lots of playing items like seesaw, swing, merry-go-round and many more. It is the best place in Shillong to visit with their young ones.

Shillong Golf Course

Shillong golf Course, is the oldest, biggest and cleanest golf course across the world. Located in Meghalaya within the district of East Khasi Hills. Inside this golf course travellers can witness a tall and thick pine tree, and because of its neatness and trimness the United States Golf Association and museum has provided it with the title of “Green eagle of the East”. In the year 1898 this golf course was established and during this time this golf course was having only 9-holes. But in 1924 Captain Jackson and C.K. Rhodes transformed this golf course into 18-holes course. Travellers can visit this place and play many sports and the best part of this golf course is that you don’t have to pay an entry fee out here.

Don Bosco Museum
