Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden

Guwahati is a beautiful place and the Assam Zoo adds some more to it. Its the largest zoo in the North east of around 432 Acre (175 hectare). The zoo is exactly located over the Hengrabari Reserved Forest , Guwahati , Assam. The total number of animal here are 895 which consists of Birds , Animals and Reptiles of 113 species from accross the world.
It was opened in 1958 and the number of average annual visitors are 4.5 lacs.

How to reach Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden?

The zoo is 6 km away from the Guwahati Railway Station which can be covered by public transports or else you can also take a cab to reach here. It’s really a short distance so you can also go by walking.

History :

During the 64th session of Indian National Congress (INC) which was held in Guwahati in the year1957. An exhibit was organised in which few animals and birds were included. After the meeting a few members from it had a thought that there was a need for a zoo to shelter these animals. The animals were shifted to Japorigog in Hengrabari Reserve forest which was later named as the Assam Zoo cum Botanical Garden. It was opened in 1957 and the general public was allowed to visit the place in 1958.
The total number of animals and birds at that time were 42 animals (22 species) and 236 birds(31 species).
The museum in the zoo was added in 1959 whereas a botanical garden was added in 1982. Also the total area of the zoo was expanded upto 175 hectare in 2002.

Main Motive of the zoo :

Apart from the zoo and botanical garden, this place also offers quality services in rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals around here , environment awareness and assure people a response to nature and wildlife tourism.
