Cherrapunji in Meghalaya is referred to as the second wettest place on the earth as it receives approximately 11,840 mm of rainfall every year. Shillong

Shillong the capital city of Meghalaya is a beautiful hill station situated at an altitude of 1,491 metres above sea level. This is the only peak station that can be accessible from all directions. It is located at a distance of 100 km from Guwahati main city which is referred to as the educational hub of north-eastern region of India. The Shillong city is surrounded by hills from every side. This amazing city is popular for its hefty rainfall all-round the globe and apart from this it also has some tallest waterfalls, outstanding lakes, and crystal clear rivers which attracts a lots of tourist from every part of India as well as from other countries.

Elephant Falls

Elephant falls is a must witness place if you are visiting Shillong, Meghalaya. It is situated at a distance of 12 kilometres only from the beautiful City Shillong. It is called Elephant Falls because within the British era when an Englishmen speckled a massive rock that appeared like an elephant near the fall. It is one of the highest visited falls in Meghalaya. This fall consists of three giant layers that can be accessed at three different-different points. Travellers can also get a close view of this fall because the barricade is quite close to the fall. It is so close that you can even touch the waterfall and relish its chillness which can relax a tired body and mind.

Double Decker Root Bridge

Within the thick tropical forest of Meghalaya, you can witness a man-made cum natural wonder known as Double Decker Root Bridge. It is situated at a distance of 62 kilometres from Shillong. The khasi tribes of the ancient hour made this amazing bridge by weaving and twisting the roots of the ficus elastica tree that were growing on each side of the river. They used a frame that trained these roots to grow in the shape of a bridge. Locals of its region used to say that this bridge is hundreds of years old as no one knows its exact age. This bridge is an alternative to wooden bridges but much stronger than bridges made up of wood blocks. Because these roots are of living trees and it will not get damaged quickly by the rainwater as other wooden bridges do.

Don Bosco Museum

You can access this outstanding museum at a distance of 3 kilometres from the Shillong main city. It is referred to as the museum cum institution. It was inaugurated in the year 2003 with an initiative that the travellers of north-east can edify themselves with the various cultures and traditions of north-eastern states and their inhabitants. The Museum displays the culture of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. It is a seven storeyed building with a research and publication centre. This beautiful museum is in the shape of a hexagon filled with art and culture. It has multiple galleries that exhibit the historical gems of north east India who fought against the English army to free their soil. The best part of this cultural museum is that you can get a mesmerising view of Shillong City from the Museum’s foot bridge.

Mawlynnong Village

This amazing village is awarded as the cleanest village of Asia, Discover India in the year 2003 crowned this place with this title. It is situated at a distance of 78 kilometres from the capital city of Meghalaya on the way to Dawki. Apart from cleanliness this small village has a hundred percent literacy rate. The climate condition of Mawlynnong remains extremely pleasant all-round the year and if you want to witness its beauty at topmost level then you must plan your trip to Mawlynnong in post monsoon. Cleanliness in this small hamlet is a way of life for every individual and although it is a village it has had functional toilets since 2007. The moment you enter this village you can observe dustbins made up of bamboo on your every second step. This village is eco-friendly therefore, carrying plastic bags, smoking, littering is banned in its region. If you are caught violating any law of this village you will be charged as fine.

Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai falls is the tallest falls of India as it cascades from a height of 1,100 feet. It is one of the best attractions of Cherrapunji. It is situated at a distance of 54 kilometres from Meghalaya’s capital city Shillong. To reach the viewpoint of Nohkalikai you have to drive your automobile through a highland. Later on you have to trek for a while for its viewpoint from where you can witness a majestic view of this waterfall. From this viewpoint you can clearly observe how the gushing water through a dense forest cascading down into a small natural pool. Post monsoon season is the best hour to visit this mesmerising waterfall because during this time this iconic waterfall of Meghalaya shows its true beauty.

Umiam Lake

An astonishing lake situated at a distance of 18 kilometres from the city Shillong. It is referred to as a manmade lake but the reservoir attracts lots of tourists every year because of its prettiness. This lake was formed when the government of Assam constructed a dam to produce hydroelectric power. This scenic lake is surrounded by lush green peaks from every side and you can also find some isles in the middle of this lake. The best part of this stunning lake can be witnessed only during the sunrise because this is the only hour when a nature-lover can get a panoramic sight. Umiam lake also offers lots of water sports for its travellers like sailing water scooter, water skiing and lots more. Mawsmai Caves

Mawsmai cave is an outstanding cave situated near Cherrapunji within the northeastern side of India in the state of Meghalaya. The best part of this cave is that it is filled with limestone hence it is also called as limestone cave. Within Cherrapunji region you can find multiple caves and Mawsami is one of more than 200 caves. From inside it is well decorated with columns, layers, stalactites and stalagmites. Although its length is 250 metres, travellers to this cave are allowed to explore only till 150 metres and its remaining portion remains closed. This is the only cave in Meghalaya which is lit properly and you will not require any guide to explore it. Flora and fauna that you can observe in this cave are totally different from the species that are living on earth. Jowai

Jowai is a superb destination which is located within the district of Jaintaia hills in the state of Meghalaya, it is also called as the heart of Meghalaya. It is surrounded by a river called Myntdu from its three sides which carries chilly water all round the year. During the coldest months of the year the water of this river is quietly chilly but it is very much pleasant during the summer season. This site is house to a tribe called Pnar that are famous for protecting their unique traditions and customs. And just to witness their unique culture and tradition people from different-different parts of the world voist this lush green landscape. Krang-Suri Falls

Situated in the middle of mountains within the Jaintia Hills, Krang Suri Falls is the most stunning waterfall of meghalaya. This waterfall is blessed with green charming surroundings and shining blue waters. The moment you reach beneath this fall you can witness a beautiful natural pool and if you desire then you can take a dip inside this majestic greenish-blue pool. Dawki is referred to as the trade hub between India and Bangladesh. If you visit this site then you can also observe the India-Bangladesh border. Laitlum Canyons

Laitlum canyons is referred to as a less explored site of East khasi Hills but it is a most picturesque place near the capital city Shillong. You can even observe floating clouds, a river that flows from the highland to lowland through the peaks, and a small but cute waterfall.
