Places to visit during Meghalaya Camping

Cherrapunji

After Mawsynram which has the title of wettest place on earth is Cherrapunji, because it receives nearly 11,840 mm of rainfall all round the year. Travellers can find this site in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The locals of Meghalaya also pronounced this place as Sohra which means the land of oranges, travellers to this location can witness numerous waterfalls in its region. In Cherrapunji site some viewpoints are there which supplies a wide view of Bangladesh border plains. Travellers apart from sightseeing also do some cave exploration as in Cherrapunji one can observe lots of caves and one of the longest caves of India belongs to this region only.

Shillong

Shillong is also known as the ‘Scotland of the East’ due to its picturesque places. It is the capital city of Meghalaya which is full of scenic vistas and outdoor sports. This beautiful city is situated at a height of 1,491 metres. This whole city is surrounded by valleys and mountains from every side. Shillong receives heavy rainfall which is responsible for the formation of stunning lakes, enchanting rivers and attractive waterfalls. Thereafter, which attracts lots of tourists to witness its speechless quality. Shillong also offers many parks, museums and play houses where travellers to this city can spend a quality time with their young ones.

Elephant Falls

Elephant Falls is situated at a distance of about 12 km from Shillong City. Travellers of Meghalaya are advised not to miss this place if they are visiting Shillong. The fall got its name as ‘Elephant Falls’ when an Englishman observed an enormous elephant shaped rock close to the falls, during the British Era in India. But on 12th of June, 1897 a major earthquake of magnitude 7.2 hit Meghalaya and destroyed the said rock and later the current of flowing water washed it away. Visitors can enjoy the view of these waterfalls from a very short distance, and to feel its chillness one can also touch it. Beneath this falls visitors there is a small pool where you can click pictures and take selfies.

Double Decker Root Bridge

At a distance of about 62 km from Shillong, you can witness a nature and man-made wonder ‘Double Decker Living Root Bridge’. It is a place where a visitor can observe natural cum manmade art by perceiving the bridge. It is said that the khasi tribes of ancient period constructed this root bridge, by weaving and twisting the roots of two rubber trees that were growing next to the river. The whole process of twisting and weaving is supported by a frame so that when these roots grow it does not lose its shape. People of this region claim that this bridge is more than hundred years old.

Don Bosco Museum

Don Bosco Museum is situated quite close to Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. It is not just a museum but also an institution which provides lots of information about science and experiments. In the year 2003 this museum was initiated with an initiative that the travellers of Shillong, Meghalaya can educate themselves about the culture and tradition of north-east people. In north-eastern region of India, altogether there are seven states which are also considered as seven sisters, and this museum displays all the traditions and cultures of these states. This museum is a seven storeyed building, which has multiple galleries and the outer structure of this building looks like a hexagon. Inside this museum travellers can witness some historical gems portraits who laid their lives to free our country from the English army.

Mawlynnong Village

Whenever we talk about villages, one thing that hits our mind is untidiness but what if you can witness a village which has been crowned as the cleanest village not only in India but in entire Asia. Mawlynnong is a village which has this title, in the year 2003 by discovery India provides this village its real admirer. Even the literacy rate of this village is almost hundred percent. The moment travellers enter this village they can witness men and women of this village are busy in cleaning, shaping the plants, sweeping and picking up the stuff from roads and footpaths. From the year 2007 this amazing village has been using functional toilets because cleanliness is the way of life for each and every individual of this village. Smoking, littering, carrying plastic bags and thermal bottles inside this village is banned, if found with these items inside this village then you have to pay a fine for breaking the law of this village.

Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai falls, cascading from a 1,100 feet height is the tallest waterfall in India and fourth tallest waterfall in the world. It is 54 kilometres away from the capital city Shillong and takes around 1 ½ hour to reach. There is a viewpoint near this fall for an exciting and complete view of Nohkalikai falls, and to reach this point you have to trek for a few minutes but before it you have to drive your vehicle through a plateau. From the viewpoint of Nohkalikai falls you can witness the gushing and overflowing water through a thick forest falling into a natural pool. If you are wanting to catch this waterfall at its top most level then you must visit it in the post monsoon season, this waterfall is even considered as the iconic waterfall, because whenever you search Meghalaya on net you are going to witness this fall pic.

Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake is one of the biggest man made lakes of Meghalaya, travellers can witness this lake on their way to Shillong from Guwahati. It is only 18 kilometres away from the capital city of Meghalaya. This lake came into existence when the Assam Hydro Electric Power planned to construct a dam for hydro-electric energy in the state. This beautiful lake is surrounded with green plateaus. Travellers can also observe small-small islands inside the lake, and if you love outdoor sports then this site is simply awesome for you because you can perform activities like boating, water skiing, water scooter and many more. The best thing to observe here in this site is perceiving a sunrise as it is truly unexplainable.

Mawsmai Caves

Near Cherrapunji travellers can observe lots of caves, and Mawsmai cave is one of them. The total length of this cave is 250 metres long but travellers are allowed to explore only till 150 metres, and the rest of its portion is completely closed. This cave is filled with limestone that is why it is also pronounced as Limestone cave. This cave is extremely beautiful from inside as it seems like it has been decorated with stalactites, stalagmites. This cave has a proper lighting system hence travellers are not required to opt for a guide. Inside this cave there are lots of plants and animal species a traveller can witness, and these species are totally different from those species that are available on the surface of the earth.

Jowai

Jowai is a perfect destination where a traveller can visit and perform many outdoor sports. It is situated in the district of Jaintia hills of Meghalaya and locals of this state are referred to as the heart of Meghalaya. A river which is called Myntdu, encircled this town from three of its sides. This beautiful river carries chilly water throughout the year, many activities can be carried out on this river like boating, kayaking, swimming. Swimming inside this river is possible only during the summer season because within the winter season the flowing water of this river is quite chilly. In Jowai travellers can witness a tribe known as Pnar who are popular because of their uncommon traditions and culture, and just to perceive their culture many tourists from outside India visit Jowai. Inside Jowai region travellers can witness lots of scenic vistas like waterfalls, lakes, rock bridges, parks and rivers.

Krang-Suri Falls

Krang Suri Falls is the most beautiful waterfall of Meghalaya, it is located in the middle of the green plateaus of Jowai. This waterfall provides a natural pool beneath it for its travellers and if you want then you can also hangout inside the pool. The water of this fall is so clear that not a single soul can restrain him/herself by jumping inside the pool. Behind this waterfall, big-big rocks are there and one can admire the beauty of the waterfall from the back by swimming till this rock. Dawki – Umngot River

Umngot river is referred to as the cleanest river in India, as it carries crystal clear water. It is situated at a distance of one kilometre from Dawki main market. This is the only place in Meghalaya which receives the highest number of tourists every year. Because of its glassy water quality, the boats that float over the river provide a feeling to its visitors that these boats are floating in the air instead of flowing over the river. Travellers can also observe the Indo-Bangladesh border. The best part of this location is that you are not going to find any fences out here, but you can witness lots of BSF soldiers here who look after any unforeseen activities. Laitlum Canyons

Laitlum Canyons a beautiful location of Meghalaya, it is located about 21 kilometres away from Shillong the capital city of Meghalaya. One of the unique things about this place is travellers can observe lots of misty vapour here, but if you visit this location during the time of sunrise you can witness lots of scenic vistas, you can observe a small water, a river flowing from upland to lowland deep inside the edges of valleys. Travellers can also witness a small helmet settled bottomless in the edges of Laitlum valleys and to reach this village a traveller has to trek down around 3000 steps.

Mawsynram

Mawsynram, one of the wettest places on earth as it receives the highest amount of rainfall compared to any other part of the world. The annual rainfall that occurs in this region is about 11,874 mm of rainfall. It is an unbelievable location and if you are interested in nature then the place is like a slice of paradise as you can witness falls, rivers, lakes and a beautiful climate condition out here. How to Reach Meghalaya

By Road: Roads connect Meghalaya to major cities. The majority of the streets are well-traveled and simple to navigate. By Air: Guwahati (Assam), 159 kilometers from Meghalaya, has a major airport (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport). The airport has direct flights to Tura and Bangkok, as well as important Indian destinations such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Calcutta. Traveling by flying to Meghalaya is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Even though there is no direct bus link from Guwahati Airport to Meghalaya, you can take a cab there.
