Places to visit during Mawsynram Trekking Tour

Mawjymbuin Cave

Mawjymbuin Cave, which is situated in Mawjymbuin Village in Mawsynram (the wettest place on Earth), in Cherrapunji, is a significant religious site. Geologists who do specialised research here are particularly interested in the 209-metre-high cave since it is constructed of calcareous sandstone and has several stalagmites (developed as a consequence of calcium carbonate depositions, weathering, and dripping of mineral enriched fluids). The Mawjymbuin Cave is a popular destination for visitors, photographers, pilgrims, and naturalists.

Lum Symper Peak and Cave

The rock-bound Lum Symper Peak, which crosses a lush base with the peak, is the ideal picnic spot for locals. Many hours of walking are necessary to get a panoramic perspective of the surroundings. Your first trial will only require a few steps from the road, and for the rest distance, you can either ascend the stairs leading to the green hilltop or go for the steep path. It is known that there has been mudslinging between Lum Symper Peak and Kyllang Rock; the dented slope that has been left behind can still be seen there.

Khreng Khreng Falls

You can take a diversion off the motorway near Mawsynram to get to these spectacular falls, which are just off the beaten road. One of the East Khasi Hills’ most easily reached waterfalls is Khreng Khreng. A little distance from the falls, there is parking for tourist vehicles. You may reach the Khreng Khreng Viewpoint, which lies down a road flanked by spectacular cliffs, after a brief hike. The granite wall from which the cascade thunders down is almost vertical. To keep the falls from pouring onto the road, a concrete wall has been built around them. On the other side of the roadway, a huge ravine receives the water that pours from the natural pool.

Mawlyngbna

Mawlyngbna is a well-kept secret in the gorgeous state of Meghalaya. Only 25 kilometres separate the area from Mawsynram, and the drive from Shillong takes about two hours. Only a few hundred people live in the town, which is located above Bangladesh’s lowlands. It is surrounded by stunning hills, gushing streams, waterfalls, caverns, and natural hot springs, all of which offer a variety of activities and surprises. There are further stunning waterfalls. Mawlyngba has seen the most archaeological finds. Animal fossils dating back 200 million years have been found and preserved at this location. There are also adventure sports offered here, such as zip lining, kayaking, and trekking. For more adventurous travellers, there is mountain biking available.

Umkhakoi Lake

It is possible to find this lovely man-made lake a bit to the west of the village. This lake was made by damming the Umkhakoi River, which has beautiful rock formations all around it on its northern side. Both locals and visitors love to picnic at the reservoir. Hills that are heavily forested surround it. There are several depressions in the stony banks, the most of which are typically filled with water. Many of the larger ones have bamboo bridges connecting their opposite sides. A tiny viewing area with expansive vistas of the environs is nearby. The calm waters of the lake are ideal for beginning kayakers. Near the observation platform, you may rent kayaks and row boats.

Split Rock

On the edges of the community, along a barren stretch, is this interesting geological structure that is worth a quick visit. A tangle of prickle-covered vegetation and clusters of jackfruit and pineapple trees are encountered along the path that leads to the rock. The path must be carefully followed because it is littered with big stones and pebbles. It ends in a little area where a large boulder has been clearly split in two. Locals blame the separation on the magnitude 8 Assam earthquake that occurred in 1897. The rock has a flat top and a distinct fracture running through the middle, and it is encircled by a tangle of tropical vegetation.

Krem Puri

This imagined mountain labyrinth is the world’s longest sandstone cave. The entrance initially appears harmless, but after a steep descent to reach here, an intriguing and occasionally perilous maze soon becomes apparent. You’ll be forced to step beyond your comfort zone and have your senses stimulated by the Krem Puri cave-diving experience. Make sure you have the necessary accessories, such as headlamps and helmets. Always follow the crowd and travel with a trustworthy local guide.

How to Reach Mawsynram

By Road: Deciding to travel by road to get to Mawsynram may be worth the time and effort because the road sceneries in north-eastern India are renowned for being stunning. The town has excellent connections to Cherrapunji as well as Shillong and Guwahati. These cities are separated by breathtaking, cloud-covered mountains and pleasant, open fields on picturesque roads.
