Mawjymbuin Cave

The well-known Mawjymbuin cave in Mawsynram hamlet, Meghalaya, is set against a gorgeous backdrop of rich flora, steep hills, and stunning waterfalls. This cave has a significant geological significance and is a true adventure delight for nature enthusiasts, historians, and spiritualists. The big attraction of this cave is a massive stalagmite in the shape of a Shiva Linga at the cave’s entrance. The Shiva Linga is constantly soaked in water coming down from the stalactite formed like a cow’s udder directly above it, which is really intriguing! This cave is surrounded by the such beautiful natural beauty that it will leave you stunned and astonished. As you give your prayers to Lord Shiva and gaze out the window, you feel a strong feeling of belonging, calm, and peace.

Lum Symper Peak and Cave

North of the Mawjymbuin Cave, the route winds through a landscape of huge meadows set against gently rising hills. A few kilometers down this path, the craggy Lum Symper Peak can be seen sharply rising in the backdrop. Picnics are popular among locals in the area of grass near the peak’s base. The top is reached after an hour of hiking and provides panoramic views of the surrounding area. The route becomes intriguing after only a few steps off the road. The first half of the hike is simple: either follow the rocky, steep route or the twisting stairway to reach the grassy hilltop. The mysterious Lum Symper Cave is hidden in the woods along Lum Symper Road. The cave’s ambiance is reminiscent of the Tomb Raider video game franchise. The path to the cave is an exciting scramble through woodlands crisscrossed by streams, one of which has a tiny waterfall and is strewn with moss-covered stones and a variety of fern species. A stepping-stone walkway leads to the enormous cavern’s entrance. During the rainy season, you’ll see naturally formed pools of crystal-clear water made by the water that is constantly dripping from the neighboring foliage. Lum Symper Cave is a deep cavern studded with boulders and stones.

Khreng Khreng Falls

To get to these stunning falls, which are just off the beaten route, take a diversion off the motorway at Mawsynram. Khreng Khreng is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the East Khasi Hills. Tourist parking is accessible a short distance from the falls. After a short hike, you can reach the Khreng Khreng Viewpoint, which is located down a road surrounded by spectacular rock formations. The cascade thunders down a nearly vertical granite cliff. To keep the falls from pouring into the road, they are encircled by a concrete wall. The water that pours from the natural pool is gathered in a large ravine on the other side of the road.

Mawlyngbna

Mawlyngbna is a well-kept secret in the beautiful state of Meghalaya. The location is around 25 kilometers from Mawsynram, and the drive from Shillong takes about two hours. Only a few hundred people live in the town, which is located above Bangladesh’s lowlands. Its surroundings, which include stunning hills, raging streams, waterfalls, caverns, and natural hot springs, provide a variety of activities and surprises. There are more stunning waterfalls. Mawlyngbna has seen the most archaeological findings. Animal fossils dating back 200 million years have been unearthed and well-preserved at this location. Adventure activities such as zip line, kayaking, and trekking are also offered. Mountain biking is an alternative for more adventurous travelers.

Umkhakoi Lake

This lovely man-made lake can be located a little west of the village. This lake was created by damming the Umkhakoi River, which has spectacular rock formations all around it on its northern side. Picnics at the reserve are popular among both locals and tourists. It is surrounded by densely forested slopes. There are several depressions in the stony banks, most of which are regularly filled with water. Several of the larger ones have bamboo bridges connecting opposite sides. A modest observation point nearby provides extensive views of the surroundings. Beginner kayakers will appreciate the lake’s calm waters. Kayaks and rowboats can be rented at the viewing platform.

Split Rock

This unique geological feature can be found on the edges of the neighborhood along a barren stretch and is well worth a quick visit. A tangle of prickle-covered vegetation and groupings of jackfruit and pineapple trees line the path to the rock. The walkway is littered with huge stones and pebbles, so proceed with caution. It concludes in a little spot where a large boulder has clearly been cut in two. Locals ascribe the separation to the 1897 Assam earthquake of magnitude 8. The rock is encircled by tropical flora and has a flat top with a distinct fracture running through the center.

Krem Puri

This imaginary mountain labyrinth is the world’s longest sandstone cave. The entry appears benign at first, but it rapidly becomes evident that this is the start of an exciting and occasionally deadly maze. The cave-diving experience at Krem Puri will take you out of your comfort zone and stimulate your senses. Make sure you have all of the necessary equipment, including helmets and lights. Always venture off the beaten route and with a trustworthy local guide.

Summer:In Mawsynram summer starts from March and lasts till the end of June. If you want to escape from a high intensity region to a low heat intensity region, then Mawsynram is considered as the best place to do so. During the summer months Mawsynram holds a temperature about 15-20 degree Celsius which is completely perfect to hide from plain and hot regions of India. If you are visiting Mawsynram during the summer season then you must keep some woollen clothes with you, because you may have to face an unexpected event which thereafter decreases the temperature.

Monsoon:If you have an intense feeling in rain then mawsynram is like a paradise for you during the monsoon season. Because you can observe some of its famous waterfalls at their topmost level. The entire region of Mawsynram receives 9500 mm of rainfall all-round year. The rainy season in Mawsynram starts from the month of June and lasts till the end of October. The rainy season is also considered the longest season in Mawsynram. During this time temperature ranges between 17-20 degree Celsius, although this temperature is perfect for outings from us it is advised to avoid visiting it during the rainy season.

Winter:Mawsynram is considered the wettest place on earth but during the coldest months of the year, it receives very less rainfall. Therefore, winter is referred to as the best time to visit Mawsynram. In winter during day time temperature ranges between 10-15 degree Celsius nevertheless it drops down to 4-6 degrees during night hours. So, you must add extra warm/woolen clothes to your luggage if you are planning to visit Mawsynram during the coldest months of the year. How to Reach Mawsynram

By Road: Traveling by car to Mawsynram may be worth the time and effort because the road scenery in north-eastern India is famous. The town is well-connected to Cherrapunji, Shillong, and Guwahati. These cities are separated by majestic, cloud-covered mountains and pleasant, open fields traversed by scenic roadways. Shillong is 60 kilometres away and takes slightly more than two hours to reach, whereas Guwahati is 150 kilometres away and easily accessible through buses, jeeps, and private autos. To go to Shillong from Cherrapunji, take a detour at Mawngap; the trek is around 80 kilometers long and takes little under three hours.

By Train: There are no railroad lines in Meghalaya, and the nearest station is 150 kilometers away in Guwahati, Assam. If you don’t want to fly, you can take the railway to Guwahati and then a car or bus to Mawsynram. The entire journey, which takes little more than 4 hours, is rewarding. The breathtaking scenery, hills, and cascading waterfalls are merely a taste of what is to come.

By Air: Shillong Airport, also known as Umroi Airport, is the nearest airport to Mawsynram. Mawsynram does not have an airport. Shillong Airport, about 86 kilometers from Mawsynram, provides direct and connecting flights to major Indian cities. After a scenic three-hour trip from Shillong, you can take a private vehicle or bus directly from the airport to Mawsynram. Some passengers may prefer to fly through Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati, Assam, rather than Shillong, for more options with direct flights around the country.
