Places to visit during Jowai One Day Tours

Tyrshi Falls

Jaintia Hills is blessed with many picturesque places and one of them is Tyrshi Falls. Which is still less explored by the travellers but its beauty is beyond explanation. This stunning waterfall is surrounded by paddy fields from every side and witnessing its prettiness from a distance is really amazing. This waterfall is situated at a distance of 55 kilometres from Shillong and 5 kilometres from Jowai. You can witness an arch bridge near this mesmerising waterfall that connects one expanse of paddy fields to another expanse as the pouring cascade of the Tyrshi falls divides the fields. Travellers have to trek down through a zigzagging footpath to reach the base of the falls and while trekking down they can observe a breath-taking view of Pynthor Nein.

Krang-Suri Falls

Situated in the middle of mountains, Krang Suri is a beautiful and stunning natural attraction in Meghalaya within the Jaintia hills district. Its beauty is really astonishing. This is the only reason why it has been featured in many Bollywood movies. At the base of this waterfall, you can observe a beautiful natural pool and if you want then you can plunge into this pool but before performing this activity you have to rent a life jacket. To reach the beneath of this falls you have to walk through a narrow path which provides its visitors an outstanding view of krang Suri region. It is quite away from cities and you will not be able to get any major restaurants therefore, you have to go with the small restaurants run by the local khasi people.

Nartiang Village

Nartiang Monoliths is the largest collection of monoliths in India, the best part of this site is that each piece of rock is denoting someone. You can witness rocks in two positions standing and flat. The standing rocks are denoting Male ancestors, however the flat one denoting the female ancestors. The site has been declared of national importance Under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958. The tallest rock denoted by a famous fighter U Mar Phalyngki, a trusted lieutenant of the Jaintia King to mark his victory in the battle. Throughout the Khasi and Jaintia hills these monoliths are placed in the memory of some famous fighters of Meghalaya.

Umlawan Caves

From Jowai at a distance of 60 km from Umlawan is situated. This cave is a limestone cave located at Lumshnong village which belongs to a district of West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. It is also called Lumshnong Cave, in Meghalaya this cave is supposed to be the most visited place in Jowai. There are two other caves named as Umskor and Kotsaki join this grave. The total length of this cave is 21 kilometres and total depth is around 100 metres. This cave is referred to as the longest and deepest cave in the sub-continent. This cave is naturally decorated with special formations of stalactites and stalagmites. In the centre of the village Lumshnong the entrance of this cave is situated. During the wettest months of the year one has to swim to enter this cave because the entrance of this cave is used to get flooded with rain water.

Jarain Pitcher Plant Lake

It is called Jarain Pitcher Plant Lake because it is surrounded by a garden in which you can witness only pitcher plants. The government of Meghalaya built this lake with an initiative to conserve this carnivorous plant. This lake is situated on the Jowai-amlarem Road and you can observe this lake from the highway itself as it spreads in an area of 50,000 square metres. In the middle of the lake, you can perceive a big manmade pitcher plant that enhances the beauty of this beautiful lake. On a beautiful day you can see small-small knolls that are situated quite close to this lake. This beautiful lake also contains a greenhouse, arched bridge and Gravel footpaths.

Syntu Ksair

Syntu Ksiar is a Jaintia language word which stands for the golden flower. This is the only place from where a great freedom fighter of Meghalaya U Kiang Nangbah has raised his voice against the British Army. This site is situated on the bank of a river named as Myntdu and now this place is a hotspot for picnics for the locals. The best part of this site is the moment you enter this location you can observe both Children and elderly persons swimming and angling in the river. You can also witness a wire suspension bridge that has been built across the river and water harvesting system within this location.

Thadlaskein Lake

It is a historical man made lake located in the West Jaintia Hills District. It is situated at a distance of 58 kilometres from the capital city of Meghalaya that is Shillong. Once upon a time there was a ruler named Sajar Nangli who had a clash with the king Jaintiapur. Thereafter he decided to leave the king’s palace along with his companions as he didn’t want to be blamed for an unavoidable battle. After leaving the palace and covering a vast distance in the evening they stopped at a particular place for resting. After some time, they started digging the ground on which they were sitting and resting With the edges of bows and arrows they were carrying and finally it turned into a beautiful lake which is popular till today in the list of huge lakes of Meghalaya.

Lalong Park

This park is about 8 kilometres far away from Jowai. Locals of the Jowai region believe that this park is a sacred place. It is famous because of the setting which oversees the valley of Pynthorwah. The District Administration of Jowai through a DRDA Tourism Project has taken some steps to improve the quality of this park by building infrastructures like water dams, canals, toilets facilities and changing rooms. To change this park into a major tourist hub a Water Eco-Park is also contracting within its region. This place provides its travellers a scenic vistas of green paddy fields on the sides of the river Myntdu. Within this park visitors can witness a traveller’s nest which offers a cosy stay in the lap of nature.

How to Reach Jowai

By Road: Despite having good access to the road, there aren’t many buses that take this route via Jowai. Through Jowai, National Highway 44 connects Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, and certain Tripura regions. The most practical way to go to Jowai by road is to make use of the shared passenger transportation services provided by Tata Sumo and Tata Indica. Travel costs are not too expensive, and tourists may even rent cars for the entire day to use any way they choose while exploring.

By Train: The closest railway station is Guwahati. It is located 104 kilometers from Shillong and has good transportation to all the major Indian cities. Meghalaya Transport Corporation schedules bus services in Guwahati to match train arrivals (MTC).

By Air: Jowai doesn’t have a direct air connection but owing to its nearby cities’ airports, passengers may fly into Shillong and Guwahati in Assam from other parts of the country. The closest airport is Shillong, which is around 60 kilometers from Jowai, despite having a weak connection with the majority of arriving flights from Kolkata. Although Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is 104 kilometers from Guwahati, it has more flights to and from Indian cities.
